The Best Insulation for Attic Rafters

Insulating at the rafters changes how your attic performs. Here's when it makes sense and what to use.

Insulating at the Rafters vs. the Floor

Most attics are insulated at the floor, which keeps the living space below comfortable and lets the attic itself stay unconditioned. Insulating at the rafters instead brings the attic inside your home's thermal envelope, turning it into a conditioned space.

You'd do this when the attic holds HVAC equipment or ductwork, when it's being converted to living space, or when you want a sealed, unvented attic assembly.

Spray Foam Is Often the Go-To

For rafter insulation, spray foam is a popular choice because it adheres to the underside of the roof deck, seals air leaks, and reaches a high R-value in limited depth. Closed-cell foam also resists moisture, which matters when you're insulating right against the roof.

It creates an unvented, sealed attic that keeps the whole space closer to indoor temperatures — ideal when ducts or equipment live up there.

Other Options at the Rafters

Rigid foam boards and batts can also be used between or under the rafters, often combined with ventilation baffles to maintain airflow above the insulation. These approaches can be more budget-friendly than foam but require careful detailing to avoid moisture issues.

The depth of your rafters and whether you want a vented or unvented assembly drive which material makes sense.

Get the Moisture Details Right

Rafter insulation is one of those jobs where the moisture and ventilation details matter enormously — get them wrong and you risk condensation against the roof deck. This is not the place to guess.

A professional can design the right assembly for your roof and climate, choosing the material and ventilation strategy that performs well and lasts.
