A plain-English guide to what attic insulation does, the common types, and how it affects your comfort and bills.
What Attic Insulation Actually Does
Attic insulation is the layer of material between your living space and the outdoors that slows the transfer of heat. In winter it keeps the warmth you're paying for inside; in summer it blocks the attic's intense heat from radiating down into your rooms.
Because heat naturally moves from warm to cool, your home is constantly losing or gaining heat through the attic. Good insulation slows that movement, so your heating and cooling systems don't have to work as hard to keep things comfortable.
How It's Measured: R-Value
Insulation performance is measured in R-value — its resistance to heat flow. The higher the R-value, the better the material insulates. R-value depends on both the type of material and how thick it is.
Different climates call for different R-values. A mild Bay Area attic needs less than a home in a harsh winter climate, but most homes still benefit from bringing an under-insulated attic up to a recommended level.
Common Types of Attic Insulation
The most common options are fiberglass batts (pre-cut rolls fitted between joists), blown-in insulation (loose fiberglass or cellulose that fills gaps evenly), and spray foam (which insulates and air-seals at once). Each has its place depending on your attic and budget.
Insulation also works best alongside air sealing. Even great insulation underperforms if conditioned air is leaking through gaps and penetrations, which is why the two jobs usually go together.
Why It Matters for Your Home
A well-insulated attic means lower energy bills, more even temperatures from room to room, and less strain on your HVAC system. It also helps with moisture control and can make your home noticeably quieter.
If your attic insulation is thin, old, flattened, or contaminated by pests, upgrading it is one of the most cost-effective improvements you can make. A professional can measure your current R-value and recommend the right upgrade.
